Susan Shankwitz

Ever since she can remember, Susan loved to draw, paint, and even sculpt in the ice and snow of her childhood homes of Wisconsin and Minnesota. As she grew older, her art increasingly took a backseat to other activities, such as music and mathematics, and she eventually earned a bachelor's degree and job in the electrical engineering field in 1990. Almost four years ago, her drive to create art could no longer be suppressed and she began taking evening art classes at various community colleges in the Dallas area and at SMU. She now works part-time as a technical writer and her main goal is not a degree in fine art, but to further polish and explore her art and develop it into a successful business. Susan enjoys creating fine art for primarily its aesthetic value but also enjoys creating functional art as well. She's found a way to express her love of art history with her "Play Chess with the Masters" chess sets, and she conveys her fascinations with architecture and and animals with her lino-cut relief prints and copper etching prints. Another interest of Susan's has been sculpting the human figure, and she has transferred these skills to drawing and sculpting the "equine figure" as well. Since emersing herself in the world of horses over a year ago through weekly riding lessons, Susan is planning on buying a horse of her own, which will no doubt serve as both a companion and model for her art. All of those slides she studied in Art History class must have had some effect on her, since she finds herself particularly attracted to the ancient breeds of the Andalusian and Friesian which are commonly found in paintings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
